Reflection/Text-based Protocols

Taking Notes

For this in class assignment I most favored taking notes. We were tasked to read an article and take basic notes on what we felt was important. In class we were placed in individual groups to discuss. I liked how I was able to hear everyone's perspective on the topic of the article, how they viewed certain parts and shared points they found was most important. Some of the things we discussed I hadn’t realized and unpacked which gave me not only a new understanding of the article but the thought process of someone else who might have thought differently. This helped me understand the article better because it wasn’t just me trying to interpret the article.   The time limit was a bit restricting. I felt as though I could say what was on my mind in less time than was needed but I also feel that it helped move along the process to hear everyone's explanations.

The Four A's

The Four A’s activity was very interesting. It made me really think about my own personal views based on the article. Usually I'd assume the summary of the text or interpret them differently but this activity had me input our own understanding based on the author's information and allowed us to further unpack the text. By doing this we were able to agree, argue, assume and aspire based on the entire text instead of one sentence or word, which helped us interpret the author's writing better. When it came to actually presenting, I do feel like that was a good thing because we got to share out what we chose and why we chose it specifically.

One word, One sentence, One phrase

This was my least favorite activity because I felt that it was very restricting. We basically nitpicked the text and didn’t really discuss anything except trying to figure out the most important to least important word phrase and sentence. We couldn’t input our own opinions about the text. There were no points of views given which made it impossible to understand everyone else's understanding of the text itself. It was just information that was shared and that was it. This was very anticlimactic and not very engaging in terms of helping us have a clear understanding of the text. I feel as though if we sat down and discussed it would help tremendously in that aspect.
