Is Pop Culture Good For You? IDK Is It?!

“Pop Culture” is contemporary popular culture that targets young people in particular and is disseminated through the media.  In this day and age, who doesn't love a little television, movies, music, art, the internet, famous people, sports, etc We all have our preferences but ultimately it’s what I feel most people nowadays indulge in their day-to-day life, especially the younger generation. When some people wake up in the morning the first thing they'd do half asleep is grabbing their phones not just to check the time but to check on what the rest of the world is doing, scrolling aimlessly on TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. Me being among the majority that partakes in this little routine every morning, it would serve as an illustration of how relevant pop culture is to our daily lives. We literally cannot escape the internet and the culture that comes with it. But when it comes to whether pop culture is good for you?!  Now that is debatable…

In my opinion yes, pop culture can be a very positive thing. As Cladwell suggests (2010) “The internet lets us exploit the power of these kinds of distant connections with marvelous efficiency” The internet allows us to communicate with individuals all around the world. As a result, a large number of individuals can spark activism for a common goal or interest. We see this in everyday life with memes, TikTok, and social media where people come together to give their opinions on videos or to spread the word about an issue or topic. Much like when the queen died, everyone and their moms were talking, tweeting, and posting about her death. There was no conversation that didn’t include the scandal of her death. This was made worldwide because it was plastered everywhere on the internet and social media. The internet has made it possible to connect to people all over the world otherwise everyone wouldn’t have known about this in such a short time of it happening.

With this consensus, we were able to come together using social media as a link between individuals. For example when Cladwell explains how Bhatia needed a bone-marrow transplant and couldn’t find a match among his relatives and friends. Although just by one email his dilemma was able to be spread throughout the internet, reaching thousands of people that otherwise wouldn’t have known about his situation or the circumstances he was in (p.320). Even if you have no personal acquaintances with the person on the other side of the computer, social media has advanced to the point where it may spur action within that population. The ability to reach others from the comfort of our own homes is more simple today than it was in the past when communication was more difficult than it is now. Ultimately Pos Culture can be seen as a very positive and important aspect of our lives. We're no more efficient in connecting with people over a wide scale through common interests, goals, and entertainment.
